The drive from Christchurch to Queenstown is one of the great road trips of the world. Not just New Zealand — the world. In a single day you can move from the flat Canterbury Plains through the dramatic tussock highlands of the Mackenzie Basin, past turquoise glacial lakes, and into the alpine heart of the Southern Alps. It's a journey that changes you a little.
This itinerary takes the inland route via State Highway 8 — the road less travelled, and by far the more spectacular. Allow two days if you can. Here's how to do it properly.
Day 1: Christchurch to Omarama
Christchurch — Start Here
Pick up your rental car and head south on SH1, then cut inland toward Geraldine. Stop for coffee in Geraldine — it's a charming small town with good cafes and a giant jersey (yes, really). From here, the landscape starts to open up as you climb toward the Mackenzie Basin.
Tekapo — Lake of Turquoise
Lake Tekapo is your first proper stop. The colour of the water — a vivid, milky turquoise caused by glacial flour suspended in the lake — is genuinely shocking the first time you see it. Walk to the Church of the Good Shepherd for the classic photo, then grab lunch at one of the lakeside cafes. If you have time, the hot pools at Tekapo Springs are excellent.
Twizel — Gateway to Aoraki
Twizel is a functional town with good fuel and food options. It's also the base for visiting Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park — if you have a spare half-day, the 20-minute detour to the Hooker Valley Track is one of the best short walks in New Zealand. The views of Aoraki are extraordinary.
Omarama — Stop for the Night
End your first day in Omarama, the quiet town at the head of the Mackenzie Basin. Before you check in, stop at The Wrinkly Rams for the Lamb Feeding Experience — bottle-feeding baby lambs on a working high country farm is one of those experiences that sounds simple and turns out to be genuinely wonderful. Browse the New Zealand craft gift shop while you're here.
In the evening, soak in the Omarama Hot Tubs — private cedar tubs under the open sky. Book ahead.
Day 2: Omarama to Queenstown
Clay Cliffs — Morning Walk
Before leaving Omarama, drive out to the Clay Cliffs Scenic Reserve. It's a short walk from the car park through a surreal landscape of eroded pinnacles and gullies. Go early for the best light and to beat any crowds.
Lindis Pass — The High Country
The road south from Omarama climbs over the Lindis Pass — one of the most beautiful drives in New Zealand. Rolling tussock, no fences, and a sense of space that's hard to find anywhere else. Stop at the top for photos.
Cromwell — Wine and Stone Fruit
Cromwell is the heart of Central Otago's wine country. Stop for lunch and pick up some local pinot noir or stone fruit if you're travelling in summer. The old town precinct by the lake is worth a wander.
Queenstown — Journey's End
Drop into Queenstown via the Kawarau Gorge — the road itself is spectacular, and you'll pass the original AJ Hackett Bungy site at the Kawarau Bridge if that's your thing. Queenstown needs no introduction: adventure, food, wine, and mountains in every direction.
Practical Tips
- Distance: Christchurch to Queenstown via SH8 is approximately 480km — allow 6-7 hours driving time without stops.
- Best time: Year-round, but summer (December–February) offers the longest days and warmest weather. Winter brings snow on the passes — check road conditions.
- Fuel: Fill up in Tekapo, Twizel, or Omarama — there are limited options on the Lindis Pass.
- Accommodation: Book ahead in peak season, especially in Tekapo and Queenstown.
- Gifts: Pick up something genuinely NZ-made at The Wrinkly Rams in Omarama — merino wool, possum fibre knitwear, paua jewellery, and more.
