The Lamb Feeding Experience at The Wrinkly Rams, Omarama

There are moments in travel that stay with you long after you've left. The kind that are simple, unhurried, and completely real. The Lamb Feeding Experience at The Wrinkly Rams is one of those moments.

Set on our working farm in Omarama, right in the heart of New Zealand's Mackenzie Basin high country, this is a hands-on encounter with the animals that define this landscape — and a chance to connect with the land behind the wool.

What Is the Lamb Feeding Experience?

The Lamb Feeding Experience is exactly what it sounds like: you get to bottle-feed baby lambs in a genuine farm setting. These are real working farm animals, raised on the high country tussock grasslands that surround Omarama. It's not a theme park or a staged attraction — it's the real thing.

You'll be guided through the experience by our team, who'll introduce you to the lambs, show you how to hold the bottle, and share a little about life on a New Zealand high country farm. It's relaxed, informal, and genuinely lovely.

Who Is It For?

Everyone. Seriously.

  • Families with children — kids absolutely love it. There's something magical about a lamb taking a bottle from your hands.
  • Couples — it's a surprisingly romantic experience. Quiet, beautiful surroundings, baby animals, and a moment to slow down together.
  • Solo travellers — a warm, welcoming experience that connects you with the local community and landscape.
  • International visitors — for many visitors, this is their first real encounter with New Zealand farm life. It's a highlight of the South Island road trip.

Where Are We?

The Wrinkly Rams is located in Omarama, on State Highway 8 — the main road between Christchurch and Queenstown. We're a natural stopping point on the classic South Island road trip, and the Lamb Feeding Experience is a perfect reason to do more than just fill up the tank.

Omarama sits at the head of the Mackenzie Basin, surrounded by the tawny tussock hills and snow-capped ranges of the Southern Alps. It's one of the most beautiful settings in New Zealand — and the backdrop to your lamb feeding session.

After the Experience

Once you've fed the lambs, take some time to explore our New Zealand craft gift shop. We stock a carefully curated range of NZ-made products — merino wool garments, possum fibre knitwear, paua jewellery, sheepskin products, skincare, books, and art. Everything has a connection to the land and the people who make it.

It's the kind of shop where you'll find gifts that mean something — not generic souvenirs, but genuine New Zealand craft with a story behind every piece.
