Pounamu - Jade

Pounamu - Jade

Te Ao Marama (Omarama) — a historical stop on the ancient Māori Pounamu trails. Before the wool and farming culture... there was Pounamu.

Formed by geological processes under the great mountains of the Southern Alps, Pounamu  was sought by local Iwi (tribes) to be carved for use as:

  • Tools — for woodworking and agriculture
  • Currency — traded for goods across Aotearoa
  • Peace deals — gifted to seal agreements between tribes
  • Adornment — worn for good luck, protection from evil, and status by ancient Māori Chiefs and Chiefesses

Genuine Pounamu holds immense spiritual, cultural, and historical value as a recognised taonga (treasure) of New Zealand. We source exclusively from authentic, legitimate artisan craftsmen and women of Te Wai Pounamu — the Island of Greenstone Waters (the South Island) — using only stone formed from this land.

Take home a genuine treasure of Aotearoa that will last for generations.
